Chester Community Charter School (CCCS) proudly serves students in grades K-8 on four campuses in nine school buildings in the Chester Upland Community. More than 4,000 students — two thirds of the district — call CCCS their school.

CCCS is dedicated to empowering students as learners through the development of a results-driven academic environment, which includes a partnership with parents, a focus on building life skills, and a commitment to cultivating children’s instinctive quest for knowledge.

Graduates from CCCS have an impressive record of achievement with significant numbers attending selective high schools beyond the district boundaries, most of them on scholarships. It is our mission to assist students in developing the necessary academic, social, and emotional skill sets to prepare them for successful academic experiences in high school, post-secondary education, and beyond.

Realizing the unique challenges children face in low-income, underserved communities such as Chester, CCCS’s management team has developed a staffing structure that provides more academic support and the ability to address specific needs on an individual basis. Each building has a principal and a building academic director. Building academic directors are experienced teachers who provide hands-on guidance, support, and professional development for classroom teachers. CCCS also maintains an active tutoring support program to address special needs.

By the time our students graduate from 8th grade, they will have acquired a solid foundation to be self-sufficient learners for the rest of their lives. They will have the ability to communicate confidently in the digital world and will be proficient in reading, mathematics, science, and technology as defined by state standards.

CCCS, like all charter schools, is a public school. Charter schools rely almost entirely on public funding under the Charter School Law. They are funded at a lower level than the traditional public schools in the same districts yet must meet state education standards. Charters provide parents with options as to where they send their children to school. The thousands of parents who have chosen CCCS over the years stand as testament to the quality of our education programs, the commitment of our staff and teachers, and our pioneering approach to meeting the unique education challenges presented by communities that have been educationally underserved.

Established in 1998 with 97 students, CCCS has steadily increased to more than 4,000 students in 12 state-of-the-art buildings on four campuses. The school is a true community success story that has transformed the lives of thousands of students and their families while breathing life back into a city that was once one of Philadelphia’s most vibrant manufacturing suburbs.

Our teachers and staff take tremendous pride in having created a “Private, Public School” culture in which our facilities and first-class, certified teaching staff resemble that of a private institution. We maintain a very high adult-to-child ratio, hands-on academic programs, a truly safe and secure learning environment, attention to individual learning styles, active parental engagement, on-site Head Start program, uniform dress, and a “whole child” approach that goes beyond academics to developing the life skills needed to succeed.

CCCS is managed by CSMI, LLC, an education management company that takes care of all of the back-office and business functions of the school, thus freeing up educators to focus exclusively on students and academics. More time for educators means more support for students. CSMI handles such things as accounting, food service, recruiting, human resources, scheduling, compliance reporting requirements, professional development programs, event coordination, school safety, and technology.

School Technology

Not only does success in today’s world require proficiency in digital technologies, but technology resources have been shown to be critical in helping to improve student achievement in reading, writing, and math. To ensure our students are fully prepared to meet the technological requirements of the 21st century, CCCS has invested in a comprehensive technology program.

  • Teachers utilize SmartBoards™ in many classrooms. SmartBoards™ combine computer technology with traditional white boards to provide a truly collaborative learning environment that makes teaching and learning more engaging.

  • Beginning in kindergarten, all students are supplied with laptop computers, iPads, or Chromebooks to aid them in the classroom.

Our school’s technology program seeks to enhance learning skills, ensure our students are on the forefront of today’s most advanced technologies, provide students with state-of-the-art, technology-based instruction, and ensure access to electronic and web-based information.

On the CCCS campuses, the challenging surroundings of the city stand in stark contrast to the safety, security, and comfort of our school. Every CCCS building is a safe and secure environment. Schools are always locked and admission is carefully screened. All schools and all school rooms are monitored by video surveillance and all have comprehensive intercom systems.
